Vice President Vance had an audience with him on Easter.
Pope Francis, who was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina and the first Latin American to hold the position, died at the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta on Monday. The Catholic pontiff, who had served in his role for 12 years, had chronic lung disease and had been admitted to the hospital in mid-February for bronchitis and pneumonia.
Pope Francis stated in late February, “Thank you for your closeness, and for the consoling prayers I have received from all over the world!” Later, in March, the pope was released from the hospital and made a public appearance.
“At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church,″ stated Cardinal Kevin Ferrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber. “He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with faithfulness, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and the marginalized.”
Vice President JD Vance met with Pope Francis briefly on Easter as he and his family visited Italy over the weekend.
“I just learned of the passing of Pope Francis. My heart goes out to the millions of Christians all over the world who loved him. I was happy to see him yesterday, though he was obviously very ill,“ the vice president stated. “I’ll always remember him for the below homily he gave in the very early days of COVID. It was really quite beautiful. May God rest his soul.“
President Trump and First Lady Melania met with Pope Francis at the Vatican in 2017. Upon hearing the news of his passing, President Trump released a heartfelt message: “Rest in Peace Pope Francis! May God Bless him and all who loved him!”
Pope Francis often emphasized the transformative power of prayer, describing it as a heartfelt conversation with God that brings comfort and strength. He encouraged prayer as a daily practice to inspire compassionate action and foster unity among people.
The College of Cardinals will soon convene at the Vatican to choose Pope Francis’ successor.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For people of faith around the globe who are impacted by the loss of the Catholic pontiff.
- For the cardinals as they prepare for the enclave to pick a successor for the position.
- For God’s purposes to be accomplished in and through His church in the U.S. and around the world.
